AUSTRALIAN + NEW ZEALAND DEFENCE DIRECTORY 2021/22 INDUSTRY GROUPS, ASSOCIATIONS & GOVERNMENT DEPARTMENTS
• Sovereign Industrial Capability Priority grants of up to $1 million help businesses build industrial capabilities aligned with Defence’s Sovereign Industrial Capability Priorities. These grants may be used to fund capital equipment including specialist software and security systems, for related design and engineering works, or for training and accreditations to fully implement new industrial capabilities. SICP grants are helping Australian businesses contribute to Australia’s sovereign defence force capability in areas ranging from continuous shipbuilding to phased array radar capability and combat clothing. • Defence Global Competitiveness Grants of up to $150,000 are available for businesses to invest in projects that build defence export capability. As with SICP grants, these grants may be used to fund capital equipment including specialist software and security systems, for related design and engineering works, or for training and accreditations to fully implement new industrial capabilities. Australian small and medium enterprises (SMEs) have used these grants to open up defence market opportunities in Europe, Asia, North America and the Middle East. • Joint Strike Fighter Industry Support Program (JSF-ISP) – Sustainment Grants of up to $250,000 are available to eligible Australian businesses to support them to win work in the sustainment phase of the Joint Strike Fighter Program. The grants support Australian companies who have been designated Assigned- Product Support Providers (A-PSPs) by the United States Government to provide maintenance, repair, overhaul and upgrade (MRO&U) services for the F-35 Joint Strike Fighter. The JSF-ISP Sustainment Grants will provide support for Australian companies to take advantage of ongoing opportunities to open up markets for aircraft component repair and cement Australia as a key strategic partner in the global F-35 enterprise. • US-Australia International Multidisciplinary University Research Initiative (AUSMURI) grants of up to $1m per year over three years are available to Australian universities involved in a successful submission to the US Multidisciplinary University Research Initiative (MURI) program . CENTRE FOR DEFENCE INDUSTRY CAPABILITY The role of the Centre for Defence Industry Capability (CDIC) is to strengthen the capabil- ity of Australian businesses to meet Defence’s requirements, working with industry and De- fence to help build a world class, globally competitive and sustainable Australian de- fence industry. The CDIC officially transferred to the Austra- lian Industry Capability (AIC) Division within the Capability Acquisition and Sustainment Group (CASG) in Defence on 28 January 2021 but the Defence industry grants admin- istration and approval functions remain with the Department of Industry, Science, Energy and Resources (DISER). Continuity of ser- vices and outreach activities has been main- tained throughout the transition of the CDIC into Defence. The CDIC has a national team of Defence In- dustry Facilitators and Defence Business Ad- visers who provide defence sector advice and support small and medium businesses to: • navigate the defence market • improve their business capability • participate in local and international supply chains • innovate for defence • identify export opportunities. The CDIC also provides advice on a range of government funding matched grants to help businesses improve their capability and ca- pacity to supply to Defence. • Capability Improvement Grants (CIGs) of up to $150,000 are available to help businesses implement recommendations from a CDIC Advisory Service. They can help fund business improvement initiatives which relate to strategic business issues, internal management and operations improvements which may help businesses better position themselves to work with Defence. • Skilling Australia’s Defence Industry systems, leadership, commercial capabilities and other business (SADI) Grants of up to $500,000 are available to support businesses in the defence sector with upskilling and training opportunities to build skills and enhance their capability to meet current or future Defence needs.
DEFENCE SCIENCE AND TECHNOLOGY GROUP The Defence Science and Technology Group (DSTG) is part of the Department of Defence and is the Government’s lead agency in safe- guarding Australia by delivering valued scien- tific advice and innovative technology solu- tions for Defence and national security. DSTG research supports the Australian De- fence Force by investigating future technolo- gies, providing smart buying advice, develop- ing new capabilities, increasing performance and safety, and reducing costs. Throughout its research activities, DSTG works with industry, academia and other re- search organisations to enhance Australia’s defence capabilities and contribute to nation- al wealth. Engagement occurs both nationally and internationally.
WORKING WITH INDUSTRY DSTG seeks to engage and collaborate with Australian industry, academia and the wider science and technology community through a range of arrangements to gain access to world leading technology that meet Defence needs, and also facilitates: • Accelerated development and transfer of innovation to enhance Defence capability and enable industry to take advantage of dual use opportunities for entry into broader markets, • Strong long term working relationships with industry and Australian research and devel- opment organisations that will enable easier identification of development opportunities and shape technology developments, and • Industry access to DSTG’s unique research expertise and facilities
